The generic Proscar is available at a significantly lower cost than the branded version. The headlines read “Merck is toying with the topic of hair loss, promising a new hair growth drug to treat a condition that’s been linked to a 10-year-old increase in teenage hair thinning. The drug is in early development and is expected to arrive in the next few months.”
Merck, the world’s biggest drugmaker, has been trying to block the new drug for six years. The drug,, is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. The drug was originally approved by the FDA in 1997 to treat prostate cancer and enlarged prostate, but the Food and Drug Administration approved it more than a decade later to treat enlarged prostate in men. Merck was the first to test the new drug in men but had to settle for the older 5-alpha reductase inhibitors such as Propecia and Zestril.
The FDA approved the drug for hair loss in men only six months before Merck was successful in blocking the new drug. The new drug will carry a 0.5mg dose of finasteride and a 5mg dose of minoxidil, the active ingredient in the older 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Merck was not able to launch the new drug in the United States until 2018.
The drug is the first to treat high blood pressure in men. It works by blocking the enzyme that converts a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, to more potent forms called as anabolic steroids. This, in turn, may help shrink the prostate gland and improve urinary symptoms such as difficulty urinating and weak urine stream.
In October 2017, the FDA issued a warning to Merck that it could block the new drug. The warning is that it could cause hair loss and other side effects in women. The drug will soon be available in the United States and European Union.
